Aug 7 – The Gospel According to David: “The Lord looks at the heart” – 1 Samuel 16:1-13 (“Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”; God’s choice is by grace, not merit; the joy of being known and accepted by God; God’s sovereign plan for our lives)

Aug 14 – The Gospel According to David: “Triumphing without a sword” – 1 Samuel 17:20-51 (“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty”; not by might, but by the Spirit; God’s power at work in those who believe; faith and action)

Aug 21 – The Gospel According to David: “Supported in the Battles” – 1 Samuel 18:1-17 (“And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.”; “In everything he did he had great success, because the Lord was with him.”; God gives the blessing of community; community of believers supporting one another in the sufferings and struggles of life; even when God allows trials, God brings blessings in it through others; helping others with the help we ourselves have received)

Aug 28 – The Gospel According to David: “Trusting God’s Justice and Timing” – 1 Samuel 24:1-22 (“May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.”; sovereignty and plan of God; entrusting justice to God rather than seeking revenge; forgiveness does not mean trusting someone)

Sep 4 – The Gospel According to David: “Awe and Joy in God’s Presence” – 2 Samuel 6:1-22 (“David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?”… David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing… David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.”; the fear of the Lord as reverence and awe; the glory of God’s presence among us; humbleness the key to worship and joy)

Sep 11 – The Gospel According to David: “The Eternal Covenant of Grace and Hope” – 2 Samuel 7:1-29 (“ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you… “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?”… “Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant”; saved by grace, not by works; God’s eternal covenant and kingdom established by His hand)

Sep 18 – The Gospel According to David: Sin – Repentance and Forgiveness – 2 Samuel 12:1-25 (“Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!... Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes?”… Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”; temptation and sin; confession and repentance; God’s grace and the consequences of sin)

Sep 25 – Forgiveness: “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” – Psalm 103:1-12 (“he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”; we can only give forgiveness if we have received it from God; the grace of God that creates love in us)

Oct 2 – Forgiveness: “Grieving your loss” – Psalm 6:1-10 (“My soul is in deep anguish. How long, LORD, how long?... My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.”; see also Psalm 13; acknowledging what needs to be forgiven; grief and lament as spiritual disciplines; finding hope in the pain when we express it)

Oct 9 – Forgiveness: “Trusting God’s justice” – Psalm 35:1-3, 17-24, 27-28 (“Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. Vindicate me in your righteousness, LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.”; refusing to take God’s place as Judge; faith that God is at work when we cannot see it; finding hope in how Jesus entrusted himself to him who judges justly and endured unjust suffering)

Oct 16 – Forgiveness: “The Healing Freedom of Forgiveness” – Luke 6:27-38 (“Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”; forgiving for our own healing; finding release from the cycle of sin and pain; freedom from resentment and bitterness)

Oct 23 – Forgiveness: “Forgiveness as spiritual warfare” – Ephesians 4:25-27; 6:10-13 (“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”; “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”; spiritual warfare distinguishes the wrong actions of people and the work of satan behind it; forgiveness breaks strongholds of anger and bitterness)

Oct 30 – Music Sunday; One service at 10:00am with Celebration Meal to follow

Nov 6 – Forgiveness: “The difference between torgiveness and reconciliation” – Matthew 18:15-20 (“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”; “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”; forgiveness can happen without repentance, but reconciliation requires repentance and change)

Nov 13 – Forgiveness: “The journey of forgiveness” – Matthew 18:21-35 (“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”; forgiveness is not a one-time act, but an ongoing journey and life-style; drawing from the infinite supply of God’s grace to us to give forgiveness to others)

Nov 20 – “Dinner with Jesus” – Luke 14:1-24 (Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”; When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable…”; “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”; hospitality can be an expression of love or pride; serving God through serving others; seeking a heavenly reward; serving the least of these)
